Naming things
What does S.O.L. mean?
It stands for SADI OPEN LABORATORY, in other languages like in Spanish or Swedish, it means sun.
What does SADI mean?
SADI is the SAMSUNG ART and DESIGN INSTITUTE, a design school located in Seoul, South Korea, with courses in Product Design, Fashion, Communication Design, among others.
What is an Open Laboratory?
A space where people meet to share their experiences while dealing with projects. In the field of technology related art and design, artists and designers get the chance to share their knowledge in the use of tools, explain how they solved some projects in the past, etc.
The term open has been used in many different contexts. This time it refers to an experience made by C. Reas at UCLA, where he organized a series of lectures along the different art schools in the University of California. D. Cuartielles and C. Reas drove through six different schools explaining the strengths of open creativity tools like Processing or Arduino.
S.O.L.'s specific context
What do people do at S.O.L.?
We meet to go hands on with our design and art projects. The lab is initially lead by D. Cuartielles, from the Arduino group, however it is open for anybody having an interesting project to join.
Will you teach me FLASH/MAXMSP/Processing/Arduino at S.O.L.?
No, this is not a class in the traditional sense. We are not having a teaching agenda. You are welcome to come and work with your own project here or even to see what the others do. But do NOT expect to see people following a lesson.
You may learn some of the above mentioned tools, but through your own experience while trying to develop your own project.
How much does it cost?
NOTHING! Best things in life are free! And S.O.L. is one of them. When coming to the sessions, we expect you to present your work to the others. That is more than enough. We (SADI) are interested in getting to know others and what they do in the art and design field. We feel paid through your company and experiences.
When does a session end?
One of the good things with SADI is that it has no closing times. We will go on for quite long. For sure we may reach midnight most of the times. You are welcome to stay until the last SADItian leaves the room.
Sounds great, where shall I subscribe?
Take a look at our people page, it is explained there.
Can I bring a friend even if s/he didn't subscribe?
Of course, just let us know through email if you can. It will be no problem anyway, there is plenty of room.
I have no equipment but I really want to learn about the weekly S.O.L. topic!
Tell us over email and we will figure out if it is possible for you to borrow some stuff during the session. We can also direct you to places where to buy some, Korea is a great place to get electronics.
